The Future of Us utilizes fictional, young adult characteristics such as teenage love, feuding friends, and a twist of time travel to expand the mind of a young adult reader. More often than not the primary characteristic used to describe the teenage, high school years references some form of selfishness. Emma and Josh, the two protagonists of the novel, represent the problem of teenage self-centeredness with their journey to change their own futures, and yet, they learn along the way the life lesson of looking beyond the personal and into the lives of others, and how words and actions affect those around them. The young adult phase of life can be extremely difficult for some, and the feeling of wanting to get on with their independent future may become consuming, allowing many authors to remind young adults to “live in the moment.” Jay Asher breaks the mindset that the young adult years and adult years are divided, not ever connected, but instead Asher insists they greatly influence one another. As he proves in his book, readers should not live only in one single moment, or for just the future, but to bring them together for a healthy balance of understanding how the words and actions of today affect the direction of tomorrow.
